ANTHRAX Drummer Says 'Stupid' Americans Won't Buy His Band's New Record
August 31, 2003ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante recently spoke to Brendan Manley of the Long Island Press about the disappointing U.S. sales performance of the band's latest CD, "We've Come For You All". "We're very happy with [the record]," Benante said. "We just want it to start selling more. Whoever has it loves it. It's just [a matter of] reaching these other people that are just sleepin'."
Benante says that the blame for the low sales of ANTHRAX latest CD can be attributed to the current trends in American pop music, which he claims place a premium on hit singles and star quality. "I think that people [in America] are just stupid," he said. "They are not like the Europeans. The Europeans fuckin' love it, ya know? They love their music — they're loyal. See, over there, it's about the record, it's about the band. Over here it's about the fucking song. ... It just doesn't make sense to me sometimes. What happened here? It's sad."
"It's just a very sad time for music," Benante said of the recent rap-metal/nu-metal trend. "I've felt that way for a while now—that music now is just contrived, and it's just people just ripping off [whatever else is] popular and there's no real integrity in it. There's no growth, there's nothing. LINKIN PARK — their second album is basically the first album." Read more.
