AUDIOSLAVE Guitarist Says New Album 'Rocks More Furiously' Than Debut

April 24, 2005

AUDIOSLAVE guitarist Tom Morello has told The Flint Journal that the group's upcoming sophomore album, "Out of Exile", "rocks more furiously" than the group's self-titled debut. "The first one was about the excitement of the creative explosion of four guys who were thrilled to be writing songs together," he said. "With this record, we felt we had already established our goal of proving AUDIOSLAVE to be a band in its own right that could creatively stand alongside RAGE [AGAINST THE MACHINE] and SOUNDGARDEN.

"We felt like we had a complete freedom. ... We relied much more on inspiration and less on preparation. We'd show up at rehearsal and go with whatever happened in the room."

AUDIOSLAVE isn't political like RAGE was, largely, Morello said, because Cornell isn't as political as former RAGE frontman Zack De La Rocha. Morello indulges his political and social beliefs with his THE NIGHTWATCHMAN solo project, a latter-day Woody Guthrie troubadour act, and Axis of Justice, a nonprofit he co-founded with SYSTEM OF A DOWN's Serj Tankian to "devote 100 percent of my political energies into a real concrete grassroots and philanthropic efforts."

As THE NIGHTWATCHMAN, Morello joined an old friend, Flint's Michael Moore, to campaign against President Bush's re-election last year.

"I think that Mike really speaks for the underdog, from his earliest work to his newest," Morello said of Moore, who directed two RAGE videos. "That's the reason he found an audience."

AUDIOSLAVE's second album, "Out of Exile", is due out on May 24.
