CAVALERA CONSPIRACY's MAX And IGOR Interviewed; Audio Available
April 22, 2008SEPULTURA founding members and current CAVALERA CONSPIRACY collaborators Max (guitar, vocals) and Igor Cavalera (drums) were interviewed by "Whiplash", a weekly metal show on Belgian national radio Studio Brussel, hosted by AFTER ALL guitarist Dries Van Damme.
Listen to the chat in streaming audio: Part 1, Part 2.
On the topic of the similarities between CAVALERA CONSPIRACY's sound and that of SEPULTURA, Max stated, "If we're creators of SEPULTURA and we can sound like that, then it must be the other guys [from the classic SEPULTURA incarnation] that didn't. I don't want to talk about SEPULTURA at all, but I'll tell you this much: before the other guys, there was Max and Igor with countless number of other guys that were part of SEPULTURA. It irritates me a lot of people only use the more popular years to talk about SEPULTURA, but they forget an entire ten-year period, which is the foundation. Without those ten years, we would have never gotten to 'Chaos A.D.' and 'Roots'. These first ten death metal years were very important. Without those [years], nothing would have happened we'd still be in Brazil or [we possibly would] not even be playing music [right now]. So those ten years were completely important. Regardless of how we were just a death metal band that didn't have musicianship. But we had the attitude. 'Troops of Doom', man that's my favorite song of a long, long time."
[Editor's note: SEPULTURA was formed sometime between 1982 and 1984, depending on which Max Cavalera interview you believe. The band recorded one EP, "Bestial Devastation" (1985) and one full-length album, "Morbid Visions" (1986),before guitarist Jairo "Tormentor" Guedz left the group and was replaced by Andreas Kisser, effectively putting an end to SEPULTURA's "death metal period." Other than Guedz, SEPULTURA is known to have featured in its ranks guitarist/vocalist Wagner "Antichrist" Lamounier in the band's earliest incarnation, but Wagner never appeared on a single SEPULTURA release and his contributions to the group's musical development are generally considered to have been negligible to nonexistent. No other former SEPULTURA members if any exist have ever appeared on any of the band's recordings. So the question is: 1. Which "countless" former members is Max referring to? Which "ten-year death metal period" is Max talking about?]
