DEF LEPPARD: 'Best Of' Enters U.K. Album Chart At No. 6

DEF LEPPARD's "Best of", a European-only compliation album of featuring the band's greatest hits plus one new song (a cover of THE KINKS' "Waterloo Sunset") has entered the U.K. album chart at No. 6 for week ending October 31, 2004.

In other news, LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen recently spoke to Malaysia's The Star Online about the group's compilation CD and their upcoming covers album. Several excerpts from the interview follow:

On the "Best of" album:

"I think we were at various (career) stages if you were to listen to the 'Best of'. During 'Pyromania' (1983) especially, we were going for a more pop and rock sound. But we weren't very confident of ourselves then.

"We improved when we got to 'Hysteria' (1987) and the songs got better. By the time we did 'Slang' (1996),we were so sure of ourselves, we recorded most of the songs live and we didn't try to overanalyse the songs or anything like that. And 'Euphoria' turned out to be something totally different as well. So every album is different and I think you can hear that change from song to song in the 'Best of'."

On recording THE KINKS' "Waterloo Sunset":

"We tried three KINKS songs — 'You Really Got Me', 'All Day and All of the Night' and 'Waterloo Sunset' — and we really liked 'Waterloo Sunset'. I think it's because we grew up listening to THE KINKS and 'Waterloo Sunset'. It is a personal favourite of mine. And when we tried playing it, it sounded great. Of course, this version of 'Waterloo Sunset' is going to sound more like us than THE KINKS."

On the upcoming CD:

"It's a covers album, and we have done the album but I'm not sure if it's going to be released or not. We covered songs from the 1970s and the only song from the 1960s that we did was 'Waterloo Sunset'. We covered songs from DAVID BOWIE, T-REX, LED ZEPPELIN ... all the 1970s stuff."
