DEFTONES Frontman On New Album: 'We Wanted To Play These Songs Live'

September 11, 2008

DEFTONES vocalist Chino Moreno has told UK's Rock Sound magazine that the Sacramento, California-based five-piece has gone back to basics for the songwriting process for its sixth studio album, tentatively titled "Eros".

"The last album ['Saturday Night Wrist'] was pieced together — it wasn't like we wrote a bunch of songs then went in to record them onto tape," Chino said. "Technology is such a crutch, especially with ProTools, everyone just went in and did their part separately and there were a few songs recorded where none of us were at the same place at the same time. I'm not saying it was a totally bad thing as it was a different way to do it, but with this new record we wanted to return to the way we started out when we were in a garage and we didn't have any way to record ourselves — we wrote songs, memorized them, played them a hundred times until we had them down, then went into the studio and recorded the record. Basically, we wanted to play these songs live and we feel that these songs are definitely going to translate a lot better live than some of the ones on the last record where we wrote the songs, recorded them then had to go into the rehearsal studio and learn how to play them!"

DEFTONES' new album was recorded in Sacramento with producer Terry Date (SOUNDGARDEN, PANTERA) and engineer Scott Olson (UNEARTH).

The band's last CD, "Saturday Night Wrist", came out in October 2006 and its creation nearly resulted in the DEFTONES' demise. But Chino Moreno said, "Our working relationship is better than it's ever been before. As a result, everything has improved — our friendships and our lives. We're all really happy now."

DEFTONES will headline KUPD's End of Summer Scorcher September 20 in Peoria, Arizona with ALICE IN CHAINS.
