WJCU 88.7 FM is a non-profit, non-commercial community college radio station located on the campus of John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio (an eastern suburb of Cleveland). The university only funds a portion of the station's operating budget. The staff is required to raise the rest from listener donations. For one week out of the year, the station sponsors a Radiothon fund drive requesting listeners to pledge their support. This year's Radiothon runs from February 13 to February 20. Donations can be made online at www.wjcu.org or by calling 216-397-4438. Despite the bad economy and university budget cuts, last year's Radiothon donations set a station record by exceeding $40,000.
The heavy metal benefit concert, which has become an annual event to coincide with the station's Radiothon week, was organized by WJCU "Metal On Metal" host and Auburn Records owner Bill Peters.
"The staff of WJCU is in awe of the talent and resources marshaled for this year's Radiothon benefit concert at Peabody's," says WJCU general manager Mark Krieger.
"It's great to hold a benefit where your friends show up to show they support you, but when your friends have the chops to stage a world-class show that gets national attention — well, that's something else altogether."
"College radio is very strong and vital to the music scene in Cleveland," adds Peabody's owner and talent buyer Chris Zitterbart. "Peabody's calendar includes a mix of national touring artists, and strong regional acts. College radio in Cleveland supports both national and regional artists through on air interviews, ticket giveaways, and on air mentions. Regional artists know that getting on the air is an important way to get their music out to new listeners. In Cleveland, music fans are tuning into, and supporting, college radio more than any other city I've been to."
