Ex-VAN HALEN Frontman GARY CHERONE: The Fans Wanted Their DAVE LEE ROTH

September 24, 2002

Former VAN HALEN frontman Gary Cherone recently spoke to Classic Rock Revisited about his relatively brief stint with the group and the commercial disappointment of the lineup's sole album, the critically-panned Van Halen III (released in 1998).

"When [the album] didn't sell [as well as expected], the writing was on the wall," Cherone admitted. "We were on tour and we brought out the old catalog and the majority of the fans did appreciate it but in the end they wanted their Dave [Lee Roth]. That is what it was. I know for a fact that [Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony, and Roth] did get together after I left and did some songs. I don't think anything came out of that stuff. I don't think it worked. Egos and personalities, you know."

When asked about the possibility of a reunion with his EXTREME bandmates at some point in the not-too-distant future, Cherone appeared surprisingly optimistic.

"We are all very close and I would not rule out an EXTREME record down the road," Gary said. "I feel very privileged to think I wrote some great songs with [ex-EXTREME guitarist] Nuno [Bettencourt]. [Former EXTREME drummer] Paul Geary manages GODSMACK and TRIBE OF JUDAH [Cherone's current project—ed.], so the family is there it is just that everybody is doing their own thing. Don't rule it out. In a couple of years, who knows?"
