Former EXHUMED Guitarist Re-Launches BEREAVE Project

January 27, 2007

Former EXHUMED guitarist Mike Beams has launched a one-man project called BEREAVE. According to Beams, "BEREAVE is a project that was started in '93 as a three-piece doom band. We were trying to recreate CATHEDRAL's 'Forest of Equilibrium' and WINTER's 'Into Darkness' pretty much. We never got anything done but had really fun, unproductive band practices. Everything was on the spot and I never remembered a riff I played. We lost our drive, never played a show, Jake Gardinia (vocalist) went off to become rapper 'Big Six', and plus I was living out of my car at the time so everything just fell apart. I borrowed a friend's drum set in '95 and recorded a demo called 'Eternally Sleep' with vocalist Mark Smith from a previous band I was in called BURIAL (San Jose). I made about twenty copies on cassettes and that was about it. In 2001 I acquired a Roland VSession drum kit and was playing more drums than guitar at one point. At the same time I bought better recording gear and had greater potential at carrying out ideas. BEREAVE has evolved into a blend of old-school death and doom metal with the guitars dropped lower than ever! As of now, I want to continue writing dark and brutal music."

Beams left EXHUMED in May 2005 because "he had burnt himself out on EXHUMED through all the touring and everything and just wasn't really motivated to continue on and give 110 percent the way that he had in the past," band founder Matt Harvey stated at the time.
