HATEBREED Guitarist: 'We've Never Changed Our Music Style, We Just Play To More People'
October 14, 2006Deadtide.com recently conducted an interview with HATEBREED guitarist Frank "3 Gun" Novinec (ex-TERROR, RINGWORM, INTEGRITY). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
Deadtide.com: What do you have to say to the people that say you've "sold out"due to Jamey's [Jasta] involvement with MTV?
Frank: "I just don't think that there are people that think that. I mean, maybe in the hardcore scene, but those are the people that once your band signs to a certain label they dismiss you. I mean, if you're a fan of the band, we've never changed our music style, we just play to more people. We never sold out. To have one of our own be the host of a show on MTV where we get all of our friends' videos played, that's interesting. You're gonna have those kinds of people no matter what we do, but we've stayed with the same formula through every record, there is no change or selling out, and that's the reason that the band's been successful for over a decade. Taking bands like EXODUS or NAPALM DEATH on tour when the agents and the managers want us to take these other bands that are selling all of these records and are more popular and we said no. That's not what we wanted to do."
Deadtide.com: What's going on with the DVD?
Frank: "The same thing that's been going on with the DVD five years ago. The people are talking about it, I think that the last I've heard is that we're gonna record a live show and put it on the DVD. We could do a miscellaneous compilation or whatever, but there's certainly enough footage on there that they've been videotaping, I know because I'm in a lot of it, they've always been videotaping stuff. It's gonna happen sooner or later; it has to happen because we've been going for over a decade, there's no reason that there shouldn't be a couple of DVDs out, but there's nothing definite right now."
Deadtide.com: HATEBREED has had a revolving door of musicians playing for the band. What are some of the reasons for that?
Frank: "Well, in the beginning, when you're in a band that's living in a van and sleeping on the floor, people come home with no money, obviously that's reason for people to leave a band. A good example of that is my guitar tech Wayne (Lozinak),the original guitar player for HATEBREED. He's the guy who played on the very first record. And he quit, and he was like, 'This band's not going anywhere, I'm going to work,' and now, ten years later, he's working for the band. Certainly that, and we've had some personal issues, and people that fucked up and had enough chances, but it's been the four of them for years, and now with me in the band it'll be like this from here on out. I certainly don't want to go anywhere from here. I've been with enough bands, there's nowhere else that I'd rather be than HATEBREED."
