Hungarian Police Seek Perpetrators Of Elaborate GUNS N' ROSES Concert Hoax

Police in Budapest are looking for the perpetrators of an elaborate GUNS N' ROSES concert hoax that has resulted in the sale of 3,000 "tickets" to a fictitious show by Axl Rose and Co. in the Hungarian capital.

According to Joe Nemes, an American Studies major at ELTE University in Budapest who first brought this story to our attention, the alleged scam began several days ago when large posters (photo) began popping up around the city inviting the public to attend the only Hungarian show on GNR's "Chinese Democracy Tour" — purportedly to be held on Sept. 26, 2003 at an airport site that is currently only partly used. "So, amid the Budapest Parade and the Formula 1 race at Hungaroring, someone already started selling the tickets [photo] at 11,000 forints apiece (about $45 each) to fans [who did] not [realize that] this [was] a hoax," says Joe. "The 'ticketing agent' also set up a stand at a parking lot of a huge shopping mall.

"Although the whole thing was going on for 3-4 days at the most (from the appearance of the first commercial poster to the hours where the police were looking for the vendor at the parking lot) the guy(s) managed to sell at least 3,000 tickets, raking in well over $100,000 from ticket sales. Fortunately, there are high-quality photos of the vendor selling tickets at the parking lot, so it's [only] a matter of time before they catch him."
