JASON NEWSTED Teaches Kids How To Rock

Former METALLICA and current VOIVOD bassist Jason Newsted was among the special guest teachers who came to San Francisco's Spring Valley Elementary school Tuesday (October 21) to share their knowledge and excitement about music to kids, according to KPIX.com. Popular music is a regular part of Ms. Chinn-Smoot's classes of 8, 9, 10, and 11-year-olds at the school, despite the fact that cutbacks have slashed arts programs in districts across Northern California.

The special event was arranged by Little Kids Rock, a privately funded nationwide organization that is trying to fill in the gaps left by policy makers who have decided music and arts programs are the among the first to go in a time of budget crisis. Free instruments to any teacher who will volunteer to teach them to their kids.

"It's sort of at this point a guerilla program ... giving instruments to kids while we wait for policy makers to start funding music programs the schools so roundly deserve," said Dave Wish, founder of Little Kids Rock.
