JOE ELLIOTT, JEFF SCOTT SOTO, KIP WINGER Pay Tribute To MIKE SHIPLEY
July 27, 2013DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott has paid tribute to Grammy-Award-winning mix engineer Mike Shipley who passed away last week.
Shipley worked with DEF LEPPARD on a number of albums, including "Pyromania", "Hysteria", "High N' Dry" and "Adrenalize".
Said Elliott: "I'm devastated to hear of the passing of Mike Shipley. He was a fantastic engineer and a good guy. Nothing got past him if it wasn't up to scratch, hence LEPPARD's nickname for him, 'bat ears.' From the 'High N' Dry' album in 1981 to the last thing we did together, 1993's 'Two Steps Behind', he was a joy to work with. RIP Shippers."
Born in Australia but living in Los Angeles at the time of his death, Shipley is best remembered for his work with hard rock and heavy metal bands like AEROSMITH, VAN HALEN, SCORPIONS, RATT, WINGER and WHITESNAKE.
"I'm very sorry to hear that the great Mike Shipley has died. He was a dear friend," said Kip Winger, who worked with Shipley on three albums, including 1993's "Pull". "Mike was a kind, generous, funny, supremely talented and skilled person. He taught me how to really make a record. I owe the majority of my studio skill to him. In my opinion he was a true genius, a title I rarely give out. This is a tragic loss to the world to say the least. I'll miss you, Mike."
Stated legendary singer Jeff Scott Soto (TALISMAN, JOURNEY, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN): "RIP to one of the recording industry's most revered studio engineers, Mike Shipley. I never had the pleasure in working with him, but the pleasure he left behind in his work was insurmountable. His methods and style were heard on a mountain of my favorite albums, I send my condolences."
