LACUNA COIL Singer: 'I Don't Have The Typical Heavy Metal Voice'
June 11, 2004LACUNA COIL singer Cristina Scabbia has revealed to The Journal Review that she didn't actually pick up on heavy metal until she was in her 20s. At the time, Scabbia was singing dance and R&B-type music, a job she didn't enjoy.
"Then I met the guys in LACUNA COIL," Scabbia said. "They asked me to do some choruses for a promo tape they wanted to send to get a deal. They liked the result of the two voices together and they asked me to stay in the band. That's when I realized I really wanted to do this.
"Honestly, I'm not really coming from heavy metal. That's maybe the huge difference you can find listening to our stuff. I don't have the typical heavy metal voice."
Fans immediately took to Scabbia, a factor she attributes as much to her vocal ability as to her attitude on stage.
"(Fans) react in a very good way (to me)," she said. "The point is that I'm really self-confident, even on stage. They can feel that I’m not the hot chick on stage because the band needs a woman to look at. They realize I can actually sing. I can actually be a good frontwoman. So they just respect me. I think if you give respect to the people, you have the same respect back."
LACUNA COIL's refreshing sound stems from a varied template of influences. Band members’ affection for goth metal like TYPE O NEGATIVE and PARADISE LOST mixes exquisitely with harsher components like that found in hardcore bands MESHUGGAH and STRAPPING YOUNG LAD.
"We thought it was interesting to mix up more music because it was boring to work on only one style," Scabbia said. "We just decided to do something different, mixing up the male and female voices first, then atmospheric pop combined with more aggressive stuff. We put it all together, and LACUNA COIL's music is the result." Read more.
