METALLICA Guitarist: 'SUMMER SANITARIUM Is Not A Big Money Maker'
July 31, 2003Despite the fact that tickets for METALLICA's Summer Sanitarium extravaganza are going for an eye-popping $75, the group's guitarist Kirk Hammett says that the band don't stand to make much money from the month-long trek.
"I'll be 100 percent honest, Summer Sanitarium is not a big money maker," Hammett told Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "There are so many expenses. We figured out that every third show we're basically doing for free. So the payoff definitely isn't financial. The big payoff for us is to play a stadium-size show. We figure we'll probably break even on this tour. And we're fine with that because we're taking the music to the fans in a festival-style show."
METALLICA launched their first Sanitarium Tour in 2000, but expanded the show this year.
"This is something that we dreamed up based on all the festivals we used to go to when we were kids," Hammett said. "The tour harkens back to a time when hard-rock festivals were a fairly regular thing. But nowadays, they're practically a thing of the past. This is our attempt to try to bring them back."
