METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' Tops UK Chart
September 14, 2008METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic" has entered the UK chart at position No. 1 — ahead of Scottish band GLASVEGAS' self-titled debut, which came in at No. 2.
The original release date for "Death Magnetic" was last Friday (September 12). However, the METALLICA album was released early, with shops selling copies on Wednesday (September 10).
GLASVEGAS' James Allan told NME.com he never expected to beat METALLICA in the album chart battle.
"I was surprised at how many it [the GLASVEGAS album] was selling," he said. "But I knew METALLICA were going to bring out an album in the same week. They're enormous.
"If it was the biggest R&B artist in the world [it would have been the same chart situation]. That's the kind of level they're at. They're the biggest metal band in the world."
An HMV spokesman confirmed to BBC News on Thursday (September 11) that "Death Magnetic" had gone on sale in the UK ahead of its planned September 12 release.
He said: "We were advised [on Wednesday] by the label [Vertigo] that because it's been leaked quite heavily, they should bring forward its physical release and allow retailers to merchandise it. That was the communication we received and we've responded to that. I'd imagine it's a similar picture across the whole of retail."
Music Week magazine reported that more than 2,500 copies of the album had been sold on CD by the end of Wednesday.
