MICHAEL SCHENKER's 'Off' Night In Manchester Ends In 'Lots Of Boos,' Says Concertgoer
August 1, 2007Legendary guitarist Michael Schenker apparently had another "off" night Sunday (July 29) when he and his band performed at the Manchester Apollo in England. Although the Manchester gig didn't quite approach the disastrous proportions achieved by Schenker's performance at the Rock & Blues Custom Show on Saturday, it fell short of the standards the crowd expected from a world-class talent of Michael's caliber. A fan who goes by the name "Chris H" posted the following recap on the Rock & Blues Custom Showforum of Schenker's performance at the Manchester Apollo:
"Due to heavy traffic, I arrived late and only got to hear the last three numbers at Manchester [Sunday] night. Although there was nothing quite as spectacularly awful as the Rock & Blues Custom Show YouTube clip, his playing was still pretty rough. The guys on the mixing desk must have realized 'cos they kept him pretty low and muddy in the mix compared to the rhythm guitarist who had a clear upfront sound. Michael looked pretty high and just seemed oblivious of the crowd. At one point he just knelt down facing his amp and let notes feed back for ages when he should have been playing a riff. Speaking to the people next to me who saw the whole of his set, they said earlier he had been swearing at the audience. There were lots of boos at the end of the set. Watching him kind of reminded me of Eddie Van Halen on one of the bad nights of the 2004 tour when he also was off his head. Altogether very sad to see such giants and innovators of rock guitar fall to such depths! I hope Schenk gets the help he so obviously needs and gets back on top of his game."
