Morning Gig: OZZFEST Openers Hit The Stage Running
July 5, 2003George Varga of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports in today's edition that nearly 13,200 fans were at Coors Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, California Thursday night (July 3) when heavy-metal legend OZZY OSBOURNE began his headlining performance at Ozzfest 2003.
That's about 13,000 more than were present when UNLOCO, a four-man band from Texas, kicked off the marathon festival that morning. The group's opening set on Ozzfest's second stage began at 9:20 a.m., 10 minutes before the Austin-based group's scheduled starting time — and nearly 111/2 hours before Osbourne was to start his two-hour closing set on the main stage.
Like all but two of the 15 bands scheduled to appear on the second stage, UNLOCO was allotted just 20 minutes for its appearance in the venue's main parking lot. It was longer than the "blink of an eye" the band sings about in "Neurotic", the third of five songs UNLOCO performed Thursday, but too short to make history or more than a fleeting impression.
