New Hampshire Musicians Discuss Their Work On SULLY ERNA's 'Avalon'

Chris Decato — a Dover, New Hampshire-based multi-instrumentalist with 20 years of playing experience, a producer/engineer with a sound design business and a father with four kids to support — and fellow New Hampshire musician Tim Theriault spoke to Denise J. Wheeler of SeacoastOnline.com about their contribution to "Avalon", the newly released solo album from GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna.

According to Decato, Erna's new CD was brought to life through a truly collaborative effort with other musicians involved in the making of the album, including Lisa Guyer, a singer from Manchester, New Hampshire.

"The writing was really very organic," says Decato. "There were a few tunes already written when I got called, but not many. Sully would have a rhythm, or someone would have a riff and we would muck around with it until some things started to take shape ... Kinda like real bands do! That was refreshing and honest, and that was what I dug right away."

Theriault concurs: "Sully was very open and encouraged input from me and everyone else in the project. Our working relationship is a lot of fun, but a lot of work also. He knows what he wants and is not afraid to go over things many times or try many different arrangements to hear what's in his head. Even if it means going all the way around to the first idea we had! I would say one of his greatest strengths is his ability to arrange, and hear everyone's parts precisely. He's got great ears."
