New Zealand's 8 FOOT SATIVA Is Worried About The Children

Taranaki Daily News reports: The abuse of children and the mistreatment of pigs are in the forefront of 8 FOOT SATIVA's mind. The Auckland, New Zealand-based band is close to recording their latest and yet-to-be-named album and the lyrics get pretty heavy.

One of the songs is drawing parallels between the way people treat animals and between the way people treat children, vocalist and songwriter Ben Read says.

"New Zealanders have a terrible track record for child abuse and killing our children; it's drawing parallels between the lack of respect for those who are in a weaker position," he says. "There are obviously a lot of animal rights lyrics."

Children's rights are at the forefront of New Zealand politics at the moment with the referendum on the anti-smacking bill.

"I don't understand all these people who are vehemently opposed to it [the bill], because it's like, why are you fighting for the right to beat your children?" Read says. "I think the law is in place to just try to change the New Zealand mentality. Every week you read some horror story about some guy who has beaten his child to death in the most disgusting way. It's about trying to change the mentality of New Zealanders where it's all right to beat the crap out of your kids."
