OLIVERI And GROHL Offer Different Takes On QOTSA's Short-Lived Hookup
July 20, 2003FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl (ex-NIRVANA) recorded and toured with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE last year before returning to his duties in fronting the FOOs. But according to Oliveri, it was more than a flirtation with membership in QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.
"The thing that was funny about Dave was he was telling us, 'Hey man, FOO FIGHTERS is over. I'm in this band with you guys,' " Oliveri tells Cincinnati CityBeat. "So of course, being a bass player who loves playing with a drummer who's like Dave, I'm hearing this, and it's like candy to my ears. 'Yeah, man, it's great. Dave Grohl is in our band.' "
But Oliveri says Grohl was under heavy pressure to return to the FOO FIGHTERS. For his part, Grohl says, while he was thoroughly energized by playing with the QUEENS, he never intended to join the band full time.
"Me joining the band was more about playing the drums than joining QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE," says Grohl. "Playing on their album was more about playing drums seriously for the first time in eight years (since NIRVANA) than actually joining the band. So it was a really cool experience in that it really recharged that love of crazy rock music, which is why I started doing this in the first place." Read more.
