Review: OZZFEST 2003 Turns Into DRENCHFEST 2003

Josh McAuliffe of Scranton Times Tribune is reporting that In spite of less-than-stellar weather conditions, "a full house of frothing metalheads got a dose of pure headbanger bliss Tuesday night at Ford Pavilion at Montage Mountain [in Scranton, Pennsylvania], where the 'Prince of (Bleeping) Darkness,' Ozzy Osbourne, triumphantly returned with his annual daylong festival of noise.

"The pavilion's lawn was a sea of ponchos as the night's festivities kicked off with a heavy downpour. But spirits were hardly dampened as the first headlining act, CHEVELLE, took the stage around 5 p.m.

"The up-and-coming trio played at a hideously high decibel level during its brief set, which featured the band's current rock radio hit, 'Send the Pain Below'.

"CHEVELLE was quickly followed by rock's reigning freak show, MARILYN MANSON. Wearing a bizarre black jumpsuit-type costume and cavorting with two scantily-clad dancers who wore bras that looked like actual breasts, the shock rocker pulled out all the stops during his highly entertaining set, which included a high-octane 'Beautiful People' and an extra-creepy rendition of the EURYTHMICS' 'Sweet Dreams'.

"However, MANSON's ultimate highlight was when he donned Mickey Mouse ears and sang a few bars of 'It's a Small World After All'. In short, skin-crawling.

"The weather had begun to clear by the time the uber-intense DISTURBED, led by leather-pant-wearing guttural screamer Dave Draiman, showed up. The band made sure to include all their bone-shattering hits, from 'Stupefied' to 'Down with the Sickness'." Read more.
