SCOTT WEILAND 'Wasn't Really There' For Creation Of New STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Album

According to The Pulse of Radio, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS bassist Robert DeLeo told Billboard.com on Friday (March 26) that the band recorded their upcoming album in an unusual manner: DeLeo, his brother and guitarist Dean and drummer Eric Kretz recorded the music in one studio, while singer Scott Weiland worked on his vocals in his own separate facility. DeLeo said about the arrangement, "Scott wasn't really there for the creation of these songs, musically. We kind of guessed our way through it . . . The songs that were sent over to [Weiland] were pretty much in a completed demo form with a scratch melody on there, and Scott has the option to use the melody or not."

DeLeo told The Pulse of Radio that STP was able to record this way because of their 20-plus year history together. "There's a certain understanding you have with each other at that point, that you know what the person is gonna like and dislike, and you know what's gonna work," he said. "And, you know, even though it is challenging, you're not in the same room, I think we've gotten to that point where it's a great achievement being able to write and produce and do this record the way we did."

The group's self-titled sixth album, its first all-new effort since 2001's "Shangri-La-Dee-Da", arrives on May 25.

A first single called "Between The Lines" surfaced last week, with the band doing a nine-date tour to promote it.

More extensive road work is planned for later this summer and beyond.
