SEPULTURA: Without A Record Deal, Pursuing Side Projects
March 25, 2002SEPULTURA have parted ways with Rick Sales Management (i.e. SLAYER, SYSTEMATIC) and have broken off contract negotiations with Sanctuary Records following the group's split with Roadrunner last year, drummer Igor Cavalera has exclusively told BLABBERMOUTH.NET. Although initial discussions between Sanctuary and SEPULTURA had taken place (a fact that was affirmed by a Sanctuary label ad placed last year in trade publication Billboard that prematurely listed SEPULTURA as part of the company's roster),differences over the terms of the contract were too substantial for the band and the label to be able to come to an agreement, and a decision was eventually made by the group to begin exploring other options.
Currently represented by former YNGWIE MALMSTEEN manager Jim Lewis, SEPULTURA are writing material for the follow-up to 2001's Nation and have thus far completed the music for three new tracks, none of which presently have titles. In addition, the band will be embarking on a lengthy Brazilian tour in April, which will be preceded by an appearance at the Topagunea Festival in Ellorio, Spain on March 31st.
Although SEPULTURA plan on continuing the writing process throughout the spring and the summer, the group's recent “down time” has allowed Cavalera to focus his attention on several potential side projects, including a possible collaboration with BIOHAZARD axeman Billy Graziadei and Brazilian electronic DJ and “professional raver” DJ Patife in an as-yet-unnamed group that is shortly due to begin demoing material at Graziadei 's mobile studio in Brazil (where Billy is temporarily residing with his Brazilian wife Karin and the couple's first child, Isabela).
In addition to the above-mentioned activities, Holland's Mascot Records recently acquired the European licensing rights from the Brazilian representatives of Roadrunner Records for the little-known soundtrack entitled No Coracao Dos Deuses (Portuguese for “In The Heart Of The Gods”),which features music written and performed primarily by Cavalera and SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser. Originally issued in 1999 and presently only available in Brazil, No Coracao Dos Deuses includes a guest appearance by former FAITH NO MORE/current FANTOMAS frontman Mike Patton in the track "Procura O Cara" and is due to receive a European release in late May. The full track listing for the effort is as follows:
