SHADOWS FALL Drummer Talks About Upcoming Album, GRAMMY Nomination

February 6, 2006

SHADOWS FALL drummer Jason Bittner has told upstate New York's TimesUnion.com that the band are currently finishing a new 12-song CD, "Fallout from the War", featuring some songs that didn't make it onto their breakthrough "The Art of War" album, some B-sides from Japan releases and a few cover songs. It's slated for release on the Century Media label in May.

But there's an even bigger album in the works for SHADOWS FALL. "We're busy working on our debut major label album," Bittner told TimesUnion.com. "It's going to be on Atlantic Records here in the States, and we're signed to Roadrunner over in Europe. This is going to be the biggest record of our career, so we've really got to focus on it."

The bandmembers are in songwriting mode right now for the Atlantic album, and they hope to be recording in the studio by May or June. The target date for the album release is February 2007.

On Wednesday evening (Feb. 8),Bittner will be sitting in the Staples Center in Los Angeles with the four other members of his band for the 48th annual Grammy Awards ceremony. And he won't be just a spectator — he's a Grammy nominee.

Bittner and his bandmates have earned a nod in the best metal performance category for their song "What Drives the Weak".

The Grammy nomination — which finds SHADOWS FALL's song pitted against tracks by MUDVAYNE, SLIPKNOT, RAMMSTEIN and MINISTRY — is the band's first brush with mainstream success.

"The nomination came right out of the blue. I had no idea," Bittner admitted. "I was online instant messaging with a buddy, when I got an e-mail from our management. The subject line read, 'SHADOWS FALL nominated for Grammy.' I couldn't believe it.

"It's really surreal for us — we're going to go the Grammy Awards. It's definitely going to be weird, because we've never done this kind of red-carpet thing before. I even bought a suit. It was a good reason to buy a suit — finally.

"Everybody keeps saying to us, 'Congratulations, congratulations,' and it's not that I'm downplaying it, but I know that we're not going to win. Sure, stranger things have happened, but the odds are against us. My personal opinion is that SLIPKNOT or MUDVAYNE will take it."

Still, he admitted, "Well, yeah, I've got a spot cleared on the mantle — just in case."
