SOULFLY's MAX CAVALERA: My Music Tastes Are Getting 'More Extreme'
September 28, 2006Courtney Devores of The Charlotte Observer recently conducted an interview with SOULFLY/ex-SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
On his five children (three stepchildren and two biological):
"I like to let them...figure out what (they) really like, what kind of music (they) want to follow, and make mistakes."
On stepson Richie, 21, who is opening SOULFLY's tour with his band INCITE:
"Richie's really committed. He gives his all every night. I told him, 'That's one thing you have that a lot of people don't.'"
On Cavalera's youngest son, budding guitarist Igor, who hasn't fallen far from the metal family tree either:
"He's 10. His favorite band is NAPALM DEATH. He's got music tastes heavier than anyone I know. He hates FALL OUT BOY."
Onthe eventual follow-up to 2005's "Dark Ages", which Cavalera predicts will be more intense and experimental, incorporating his love of bass-heavy, dub reggae and lyrics inspired by a book on prison rebellions in Cavalera's native country of Brazil:
"I've been analyzing my music tastes and it's going more extreme. Most people my age get more mellow. I never grow up."
On reuniting onstage in August with brother Igor (ex-SEPULTURA drummer) during a concert in Phoenix, Ariz., that SOULFLY has held in memory of Max's stepson Dana Wells for the past decade:
"It was exciting and emotional. It's almost the same spot where we left. We split up when Dana died. It's really going back to where it broke and fixing it again."
