STATIC-X Bassist On Band's New Touring Singer: 'It's A Cool Thing To Have A Buddy Doing This With Us'
July 4, 2019Tony Campos says that the vocalist who is wearing a mask in the likeness of late frontman Wayne Static during STATIC-X's reunion tour is a longtime "buddy" who is "recaptur[ing] the vibe and the spirit of what Wayne did."
The North American trek, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of STATIC-X's platinum-certified "Wisconsin Death Trip" album and pays homage to Static, features co-headliner DEVILDRIVER and support from DOPE.
While the identity of STATIC-X's touring singer has not been officially revealed, strong rumors suggest that DOPE frontman Edsel Dope is pulling double duty during the trek and performing with bassist Campos, drummer Ken Jay and guitarist Koichi Fukuda.
Asked by The Underground Australia in a new interview how STATIC-X went about choosing a vocalist to front the band on the current tour, Campos said (hear audio below): "Obviously, you want someone that can recapture the vibe and the spirit of what Wayne did — not necessarily a carbon copy, but to do it right, to do it respectfully. And the guy we found, he knew Wayne, he was friends [with Wayne], he goes way back with us, so for him, it's kind of personal too. Considering all that, he was the right guy for the job. The way he's approaching it is, 'I wanna do something cool for an old friend.' And that's how he's approaching it… Like I said, we go way back with him, so it's a cool thing to have a buddy doing this with us."
STATIC-X kicked off its reunion tour on June 18 in Tempe, Arizona.
Static died in November 2014 after mixing Xanax and other powerful prescription drugs with alcohol, according to the coroner's report. The 48-year-old, whose real name was Wayne Richard Wells, was found dead in his Landers, California home.
Static founded STATIC-X in 1994 and achieved commercial success with "Wisconsin Death Trip", which included the rock radio hit "Push It".
"Project Regeneration", featuring the last recordings of Static, will be released later this year. The rest of the group's original lineup will also be featured on the album and in the music videos.
