Suspect In MIA ZAPATA Case Won't Fight Extradition
March 19, 2003The man charged with strangling grunge singer Mia Zapata 10 years ago will not fight extradition to Seattle, his attorney said yesterday.
Seattle police will have 30 days to pick up Jesus C. Mezquia in Florida in the 1993 killing, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Zapata, the 27-year-old lead singer of THE GITS, was found dead on a Seattle street. She had been beaten, raped and strangled with the drawstring of her GITS sweat shirt.
Mezquia, 48, of Marathon in the Florida Keys, was charged with first-degree murder last month after authorities said DNA evidence tied him to Zapata's death. He is being held without bail at the Miami-Dade County Jail on a fugitive warrant for murder and violation of probation.
If convicted, Mezquia faces 20 years to life in prison.
