TED NUGENT Touts Gun Rights At Western Michigan University
April 2, 2008The Muskegon Chronicle reports that legendary rocker Ted Nugent made an appearance Monday night (March 31) at Western Michigan University, where he spoke for more than two hours, answered questions and ended the night with a distortion-heavy version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" on his electric guitar.
"I'm here to celebrate the American dream," said Nugent, standing on the stage in front of a giant American flag and a backdrop of red, white and blue lighting.
Nugent, a Michigan native who now lives in Texas, was invited to Western Michigan University's campus by the College Republicans.
An outspoken gun-rights advocate, Nugent spent much of the evening discussing how the U.S. Supreme Court has taken up the debate over gun control, hearing an important Second Amendment case last month out of the District of Columbia.
"My heart is shattered that the Supreme Court is even debating this," said Nugent, who pleaded with audience members to stand up for their "inalienable right" to carry weapons. "As goes your right to self-defense, goes your freedom."
Nugent also argued: "As goes our Second Amendment guarantees, so goes our American dream. ... We will not have a Second Amendment until we don't need a government-regulated gun permit."
