Visual Effects Company R!OT Does Time With KORN
September 30, 2003VFXPro reports that visual effects company R!OT Santa Monica arranged a face-to-face encounter between "Lara Croft" star Angelina Jolie and KORN for the band's latest video "Did My Time". Artists composited images of Jolie, who was shot in Canada, into the Los Angeles alley where the rest of the video was filmed and made it appear as though she is staring KORN lead singer Jonathan Davis straight in the eye. Directed by Dave Meyers of @radical media, "Did My Time" is the first video release from the band's upcoming album, "Take A Look In The Mirror", due on November 18 through Epic Records. The song also appears in the movie "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life".
"The opening and closing scenes, where Angelina is striding through the alley were fairly straightforward, but the majority of the shots were exceedingly complex and required many subtle enhancements," explained R!OT compositor Kiki Chansamone. "We added many layers of smoke and debris, as well as camera shake to suggest the ferocity of her interaction with the band. Objects were flying through the air and often colliding with one another, and it all had to appear natural and consistent."
Chansamone also produced a brief, but memorable effect, in which Davis seems to bend his fingers backward at an almost 90-degree angle. "Originally, it was conceived as a 3D shot, but we suggested that it might be done faster and more economically in Inferno," Chansamone observed. "I took the plate as it was shot, wiped the hand away, and created a new hand with joints that worked in the opposite direction." Read more.
